Character: Ji-Li
Student name: Melanie Therond

1) Question: How did your class status affect your life in the cultural revolution?
Answer: Well first of all it was a great shock for me because I started of as a respected and admired student(p.1). But then when the cultural revolution started taking in consideration political backgrounds I lost all the respect I had and my class status crashed down to black(unreliable)(p.57-p.59). My class status also stopped me from doing a lot of things such as being an army liberation(p.8-p.10) dancer and a red successor(p.57-p.59). Having a black class status also made me make hard decisions for example needing to choose between my family or being an educable child(p.224-228). Over all my class status pretty much made me sink down ,low away from my happy life and I think it is terrible how such a small thing can turn out to be so big and important.
2)Question: How did you feel when you were sent to the fields?
Answer:They forced me to choose my country over my family who needed me. I had wanted to go to the factory but then Chang hong convinced me to go to the country side(p.232-p.233). They expected to me to leave my sick mother and my grandmother alone to take care of my brother and sister. They had no heart they didn't understand that my father was locked up and that my family were having a hard time. They didn't care they just thought I should forget about my family who needed me and go off to be a faithful follower of Mao(p.232-233).

3)Question: What did the search party to when they came to search your house?
Answer: The first time they searched our house they left in a terrible state. It hurt me watching them look carelessly through my treasured and private possessions not paying any attention about how fragile the object was. By the end of the search my room . The house was in the state of a garbage dump nearly everything we owned had been shredded to pieces or taken away(p.133-138). The second time they came was even worse it was during my farther was locked up. When they arrived they searched our house for the letter complaining about the situation in the theater(p.251-p.255). To make us tell them where it was hidden he humiliated our mother and grandmother by calling them landlords wives and he hit our grandmother(p.253). Then he made her kneel down and face the wall(p.253). He told us that if we cared about her we should confess and that if we didn't she would stay there forever(p.253). When they finally found the letter they said to my mother that she would be part of my Father's struggle meeting (p.255)and they said to my grandmother that she would sweep the streets(p.256).
Over all the people who led the search parties treated me and my family badly and they took no respect for our possessions.

4)Question: How did you feel about your father being locked up?
Answer: The idea of my father being locked up scared me and my family. We were all very tense because we didn't know if our father was alive, injured or dead. When I went to bring my father clothes I was relieved to see him standing and alive but he looked worn out(p.189). There I saw him carrying concrete pipes, they were making him to work to try to make him confess(p.188). My father gone made every body very worried Grandma would cry when ever she thought about him(p.191) and she would pray for him every night(p183). My father not being home worried me greatly and we couldn't wait until he came back.

Flex day Field trip

October 12, 2008 Flex dayGarment Factory Questions

1. Name one idea you have after this visit that connects to the idea of using resources!

2. Name one idea you have after this visit that relates to the word 'population'.

3. On a scale of 1-10, 10 being the top score, how would you rate the quality of the work environment you saw here, and why?

4. What does the word 'export' have to do with today's visit?

5. What do you think the level of safety is here? What makes you think this?

6. How old do you think the workers here are, on average?

7. What is one question you still have about the garment industry here in Bangladesh?

8. What types of issues does this factory cause or help solve in terms of resources here in Bangladesh?

9. What might you say about economic issues based on today's visit?Do you think the products being manufactured here help or hurtBangladesh?

Answer one of the above questions and add two points of observation or reflection from the day abouts the two places we visited (Sterling Styles factory and Up2Date apparel office). Also you can compose a question that you may have from our flex day adventures. You should post these three items on your blog page.1) answer a question 2) make two observations or reflections (or write your own questions that you may have) Three things in total!

5. What do you think the level of safety is here? What makes you think this?

The factory was clean and ordered most things were labelled and had included instructions.
Masks were provided but not all the people were wearing them, I think for more safety every body should wear a mask. The rooms were provided with fire extinguishers and a set of instructions for how to use them I think that this is a very important thing to have.Medical treatment was also provided for workers. This is good for the worker's safety. The work spaces were also outlined with yellow lines, this was a good way to show us when we were to close to the machines and workers.

Over all I think the factory was quite safe because it was organized and provided what was needed for an emergency.(fire extinguisher, Medical care). Some improvents could be made (such as the masks issue) but in the whole it is quite safe.

Reflections
.The factory had alot of workers which each had their own specific job.

.The factory made clothes for alot of different brands such as gap.

End-of-book reflection questions

The Revealers Begin brainstorming the answers with members of your group!

1. Ms. Hogeboom told Russell that everyone was reading the and that the atmosphere of the school was changing…”It was like a small revolution” (175). Explain what she means about the school culture and their affect on it.
I think she mean's that it is affecting the school because more people are becoming aware of bullying so this type of activity is becoming more risky do to. Mrs Hogeboom on p.175 says "But I really felt that students were actually starting to treat each other differently" this shows that she thinks children are starting to think more about how they treat others. Overall the school atmosphere is becoming a better place, student's are starting to treat others with respect and are becoming more aware of problems because of the revealer.

2. Describe why The Revealers project was so successful with students and judges alike.

The project was so successful because it included lots of differnt things such as videos, interviews, stories and lots more. They also had a good hypothesis which was(p.194) "bringing bullying and harassment incidents to light among the whole student body in a school will result in these incidents happening less often, and being less severe.". To support there hypothesis they all so did a survey which helped convince the judges that they were right. What was also very popular were the videos this attracted alot of crowds. Over all their project was of a high standard with a variety of options and it also helped the school decrease in bullying.

3. Russell, Elliot, and Catalina's hypothesis for their science fair project was "if bullying and harassment incidents were brought to light among the whole student body in a school then there will be a reduction in these incidents as well as them being less severe in nature"(194). Did the three main characters prove their hypothesis? Discuss. What is one way you could use technology to improve the school at AISD?
Catalina, Russel and Elliot proved their hypothesis to the judges(p.195) by the survey they had done. The survey showed that out of three hundred and forty three surveys, two hundred and thirty-sixty seven percent- said they had been involved in a bullying incident in their school. Ninety two percent said they had read the revealer. Eighty two percent of the students felt that bullying had decreased in their school since the revealer was published.
( all the information above comes from p.195)

Elliot's Expose

Blog response instructions:

When Elliot writes about his experience with the Jock Rots and sends it out over the KidNet, he includes the following quote in his letter."I think people ought to realize that stuff like this goes on every day…The rest of you are all part of it-because you let it go on and maybe you think it's funny, or you think it only happens to geeky outsiders and kids who are smaller or fatter or skinnier or don't have so many friends or so much money as you. So tell me-what happens when you don't have so many friends one day, or you don't have so much money, or something bad happens to you?" (91-92)
Blog Question:What is the message is he trying to get across to his classmates? (6pts)
Two Peer Responses (4 pts)

I think Elliot is trying to make his classmates think, what if it was them who this was happening to and how they would feel. Like he said in the quote(p.92) this could happen to anyone and it could even start happening to them now for any reason. I think he also is telling them that everyone should be respected and it is not because one person is different they should be treated like an old, smelly pair of socks. He is trying to make them think how it is to be bullied and treated badly. On p.93 he says "Let them wake up in the morning feeling scard" this shows that this letter is also a way for him to get his revenge at the Jock Rots and make them fear, about what's going to happen next.

I think that Elliot wrote a very strong piece of writing about how it feels to be bullied and it makes me think how horrible it must be. It also reminds me that everybody should be treated with respect.

Blog Question: After the Bully Lab was renamed, the Revealers, and the stories of the three Darkland students were released and well received by the student body, Elliot wanted to publish Russell’s narrative about Richie punching Russell in the face.
1) Why was Russell so opposed to the idea (pg. 110)? Explain. (4 pts)
Russel is so opposed to the idea because on page 97 Richie protects Russel when Blanchette and Burke start threatening him. This makes him think that Richie isn't that bad after all and that he doesn't want to get on his bad side again. He also probably is scared that Richie might start bullying him again.
2) What is happening to the relationship between Russell and Richie. (3 pts)
Richie is starting to be friendlier to Russel because he feels bad about what he did. We know he feels bad because on page 44 he layed Russel on the grass out of the middle of the road after punching him. Russel is still careful about what he says and does when Richie is a round but he isn't scared of him anymore

3) Two Peer Comments (4 pts each)
